Great Big Story (GBS) —the distributed video network operating under the stewardship of CNN— has developed and produced four stories about Peru. One of them involves a unique centuries-old Incan tradition that continues to this day – the renovation of the Q’eswachaka Bridge.

Every year, in a hidden corner of the Peruvian Andes, about 3 hours drive from the city of Cusco, four Quechua communities come together to renew a bridge that is over five centuries old. During the second week of June, hundreds of locals gather to hand build a new 124-foot-long rope bridge over the Apurímac River. Using only natural fibers and no small measure of dedication and teamwork, the community members tear down the previous year’s bridge and constructs a new one in an epic three-day feat. Master builders Eleuterio Callo Tapia and Victoriano Arizapana take you through the process and invited you to the ensuing celebration.
